When it comes to dory accessories, there are the things you need – like a good set of oars or replacement tholepins – and then there are the things you want. The latter might include a stern seat with a locker, a custom boat cover or a whimsical dory whirligig. A selection of items are listed below. Don’t see the thing you’re looking for? Give us a call. Chances are we can help.

Oars

The Dory Shop’s oars get top marks for craftsmanship. Made from white spruce, they are strong, light and durable and come fine sanded, ready for oiling – that’s how we prefer to treat ours. Or if you’d prefer to have them varnished, we can do that. Heck, you can even get all fancy and add leathers. We’re here to serve! Oars up to 9 feet in length are made from a single, solid piece of wood, while longer oars are a laminated, four-piece construction; again, very strong and long lasting. Price depends on size - please contact us for a quote.

Tholepins

The traditional alternative to oarlocks, these wooden pins come standard on our dories. Need some replacements? We sell them by the dozen. We have two different sizes of shaft: 5/8" and 3/4". Price varies depending on the size and how many you would like, so please contact us for a quote.

Authentic Dory Bailer

Made by our local blockmaker, these wood and sheet metal bailers are the real deal for a traditionally kitted dory. And like most historic designs, they work like a charm. Looks a lot better than a Javex bottle! Cost is $30 CAD plus tax and shipping.

Seats and Lockers

Looking for some extra seating, maybe a little storage that’s out of the weather? We can build seats in either the bow or the stern. The seats can be removable or they can be built-in to form a convenient storage locker. Hint for husbands: if you’re looking for ways to convince the household minister of finance of your need for a dory, offer to get a stern seat so she can sit comfortably in full view of you toiling at the oars. Parasol optional! Cost depends on what you are looking for, so please contact us for a quote.

Shoes and False Bottoms

Want a little extra protection when you haul your boat up for an island picnic? Ask us to add shoes. These oak strips run along either edge of a dory’s bottom as well as a couple from stem to stern. Or if you anticipate extreme rough handling on rocky shores, we can add an entire layer of hardwood known as a false bottom.

Boat Covers

Want a canvas cover so you can store your boat upright without worrying it will collect rainwater? We build a simple to install strongback, then work with Lunenburg sail makers to provide a custom fit. Cost depends on what you are looking for, so please contact us for a quote.

Lettering and Name Boards

Planning to name your boat? We’re happy to add lettering and nameboards. Cost depends on what you are looking for, so please contact us for a quote.
